Managing The Commercial Communications Process (Week 1)

Welcome to my first blog post of my "Lecture Logic" series. As explained previously, I currently study four modules, four days a week at Buckinghamshire New University. Lecture Logic will hopefully be able to give you an insight into the Marketing, Digital and PR world through a student's eyes. Enjoy!

As with any first day in a new environment, a short introductory workshop was devised by Course Leader, Vic Davies. Marketing is a substantial sector within the business industry today and is continuously growing. Therefore, it is important to identify the development of agencies, roles within the agencies and how they relate to trends within the industry.

All agencies work under the supervision of Industry Bodies. These are organisations that represent the interests of people and businesses in a given creative market. They can also be used as helpful sources of information, facts and statistics, professional support, industry events, financial assistance and more. A few examples of key industry bodies operating within the UK at the moment are:

  • IPA (Institute of Practitioners in Advertising)
  • CIPR (Chartered Institute of Public Relations)
  • MAA (Marketing Agencies Association)
As the academic year progresses, coursework material for the MCCP module will require effective teamwork. Vic informed us that we will be asked to create our own agency groups and carry out extensive research into a given client brief in relation to strategic positioning in the market, services, goals and objectives and more.

In order for the class to feel comfortable in our new given task, Vic provided us with "The Belbin Test". The test is often used by organisations when identifying individuals performance and/or recruiting new staff. The results can often identify people's strengths and weaknesses to ensure appropriate tasks are delegated well. Other advantages include:
  • Individuals can form productive working relationships;
  • High-performing teams can be selected and developed more effectively;
  • Self-awareness can be identified in order to increase personal performance;
  • Specific talent can be identified in a given workplace or education;
  • Recruitment decisions can be aided more successfully.
And much more!

Why don't you take The Belbin Test and let me know what your team role is in the comments down below! A table of all Belbin types, strengths and weaknesses are shown below.
