Public Relations Practice & Skillset (Week 7)

Today, we received the brief for Coursework 001 as part of the Public Relations Practice & Skillset Module. This can be found by clicking here. Keep a look out for my final copy of the assignment/briefing (and grade) in my "University Portfolio & Achievements" page above.

This afternoon was also a key date for my PR class and took a slightly different route to our regular lecture format as myself and my PR classmates were fortunate enough to meet Ceri-Jane Hackling, Managing Director and Founder of public relations agency, Cerub PR. Firstly, let me tell you a bit about her agency and what they do.

Cerub PR was established in 2003 by Managing Director Ceri-Jane Hackling to provide effective, no fuss PR to forward thinking, ambitious businesses. After graduating university and working across many well-known larger London PR agencies for numerous years; Ceri-Jane realised that many clients weren’t getting the personal service and attention they deserved and that agencies were more concerned with the bottom line than supporting and understanding their clients’ business. Boutique agency Cerub PR was then set up to do things differently and don’t believe in the usual ‘fluff and guff’ you hear from PR agencies. Instead, Cerub PR believe in a straightforward, straight talking approach where all efforts are geared towards achieving the coverage you need to build your brand and grow your own business.

Ceri-Jane was a breath of fresh air on a Wednesday morning at university as (personally), she was the first person I had spoken to (other than my lecturer and PR professional, Dr. Bill Nichols of course), about working within a PR environment and what the job role entails. She was extremely interesting to talk to and I certainly learnt a lot from her. Firstly, she spoke to us about how she set up her agency and why (this is outlined below) and how Cerub PR works with their clients. Next, she was very kind enough to give us tips and tricks on how to get involved within the industry and general PR facts and recommendations. These are outlined on Cerub PR’s official website which can be found by clicking the links below;

Successful PR requires that the client and the agency meet mutual expectations - to this end, the Cerub Charter explains your role in the PR process.

There are a number of myths around PR, and how it works, so here are a few that Cerub PR would like to dispel.

Many people think that PR is about press releases, text and words, and yes, to some extent it is; however, the importance of images cannot be underestimated. When readers pick up a newspaper or magazine and have a flick through, stories with accompanying images are much more likely to catch audience’s attention. As a result, the use of good images and effective photography when working to achieve press coverage. As PR professionals, one of the biggest problems we face is clients who don't understand the importance of images, so here are some guidelines on images and how and why to use them.
